Nairn Barnes

Materials Engineering

Nairn Barnes graduated in the Fall of 2017 from the University of Alberta with a PhD in Materials Engineering under the CCWJ. The work he did with the CCWJ aimed to bring a deeper understanding to chromium carbide overlays. He joined Supreme Steel as a welding engineer-in-training directly following successful completion of his defence. Today, he works as a Senior Welding and Materials Engineer at IRISNDT.

He is the recipent of many awards and recognitions, including the University of Alberta Academic Excellence Scholarship, the Neil McEwen Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Welding (Materials) Engineering, and the U of A’s Faculty of Engineering Academic Excellence Scholarship. He is also a two-time recipent of the AWS Fellowship Award and a three-time recipent of the Dean’s Research Award from the U of A.

Nairn is actively involved in the American Welding Society (AWS) Technical Committee and the IIW Young Leaders Task Group. He was a past chair of AWS/CWA University of Alberta Student Chapter.
